Chapter 1: “After darkly looking at his leg and at me several times, he came closer to my tombstone, took me by both arms, and tilted me back as far as he could hold me, so that his eyes looked most powerfully down into mine, and mine looked most helplessly up into his.” (pg. 3) In this quote we get a feel for how he had felt in this situation. Having a random stranger come up to you and start to tilt you back and forth. If that was me I would be freaking out. But he isn’t he is calm and we can tell that he is not huge because this guy was able to pick him up.
Chapter 2: “' You know Pip,” said Joe solemnly, with his last bite in his cheek, and speaking in a confidential voice, as if we two were quite alone, “you and me is always friends, and I'd be the last it tell upon you, any time. But such a”-he moved his chair, and looked about the floor between us, and then again at me - “such a most uncommon bolt as that!'” (pg.10) Pip doesn’t have any friends and his sister doesn’t even treat him that well. But Joe who is his sisters husband cares for him and is always there for him.
Chapter 3: “All this I saw in a moment, for I had only a moment to see it in: he swore an oath at me, made a hit at me- it was a round, weak blow that missed me and almost knocked himself down, for it made him stumble...”(pg.15) He was bringing food to the guy but realized that it didn’t look like the same guy he had seen the night before. Here we can tell that Pip is brave and isn’t afraid of encountering strangers. We also learn that he is obedient.
Chapter 4: “'Trouble?” echoed my sister, “trouble?” And then entered on a fearful catalogue of all the illnesses I had been guilty of, and all the acts of sleeplessness I had committed, and all the high places I had tumbled from, and all the low places I had tumbled into, and all the injuries I had done myself, and all the times she had wished me in my grave, and I had contumaciously refused to go there.” (pg.24) Pip realizes that he hasn’t been the greatest person and that raising him hasn’t been the easiest job for his sister. I like this because I have an idea of what his sister is going through. Its hard to take care of someone who isn’t your child especially when you guys are siblings.
Chapter 5: “'And pray, what might you want with him?'”(pg. 27) Pips sister says this, we see that she tries to protect her husband and really cares for him. When the solider comes over looking for him we can tell that she is hoping that he isn’t in any trouble with the king.
Chapter 6: “The fear of losing Joe's confidence, and of thenceforth sitting in the chimney-corner at night staring drearily at my for ever lost companion and friend, tied up my tongue.” Pip thinks highly of Joe and wouldn’t want to do or say anything that would make Joe think of him as a bad person because of how much love and respect he has towards him. (pg.37)
Chapter 7:“Joe recited this couplet with such manifest pride and careful perspicuity that I asked him if he had made it himself.” (pg. 42) Since Joe didn’t go to school I was surprised he knew what and how to make a couplet. We can tell that he was smart and had to learn it from somewhere even though he didn’t go to school.
